Retaining walls are a cornerstone for many landscapes. They offer both practical and ornamental benefits both enhance your landscape and make it more useable. If you are contemplating redoing your landscape, think about whether adding a retaining wall or two to your property could be of benefit.
1. Keep a hillside at bay. If you live on the property with steep slopes, retaining walls are almost a necessity to keep the hillside where you want it to be. In fact, these walls were first developed to keep hillsides in place. 2. Level out a steep yard. If you have a steep yard, you probably would love to have at least part of the property level. With a retaining and some moved soil, you can take your steep yard from diagonal to horizontal. 3. Minimize erosion. A big issue in living on a steep property is that water will erode the surface. This displaced soil is a problem. A retaining as part of your Calgary landscaping helps to keep that problem to a minimum. 4. Manage water runoff. Part of building a putting in drainage for all the water coming down the hill behind it. By capturing it behind the wall and sending it off, this can help keep water away from the foundation of your home. 5. Serve as planters. Retaining walls can give your yard distinct planters for seasonal flowers. They are a great way to brighten up the yard from late spring to early fall. 6. Offer a clean line between the lawn and planting beds. Mowing and trimming is much easier when you don't have to worry about hitting tender plants. A retaining wall will make this much easier and cause the work to go faster. 7. Serve as a backdrop for a water feature. If you want to give your landscape a focal point, you can use a retaining wall as a backdrop for a pond or a fountain. Nestled at the base of a hillside it can even look like a natural creek.
