How to Create a Rustic Look in Your Home |

You love the look inspired by a mountain cabin or a quiet country cottage. The rustic look reminds you of days spent outside by the lake or in a fishing boat. If you want to recreate that feeling in your home, here are a few tips.
Start with the Floors
One of the staples in any cabin or country cottage is hardwood flooring. Hardwood floors are informal and beautiful. You’ll want to choose a color that isn’t too dark or too light, but a mid-tone that has a country vibe. Select hardwood flooring that shows the grain of the wood for an authentic look.
Open Shelving
Real cabins often lack storage, and you see stuff stored on shelves placed along the walls of the home. Mimic this look by using open cabinets – you can even remove the doors from existing cabinets. It’s also okay to leave stuff on the counters as long as it is organized.
Don’t Worry about Matching
The rustic look is also eclectic. Appliances don’t have to match and you can use different materials to create a sense of items being purchased at various times. A stainless steel stove looks just fine in the same kitchen as a white refrigerator.
Carry the Wood Through
Don’t stop with hardwood floors. A wooden ceiling and wooden banisters along the stairs continue the rustic theme. Wooden cabinets that are not painted also enhance this image. You can even add wooden planks along a wall to capture the rustic vibe.
Use Soft Colors
A room with a lot of wood needs something to soften the edges. Choose light, calming colors for a wonderful contrast. A light blue or soft green are ideal choices as well as a pastel yellow. Where you place these colors will have a direct impact on what becomes the focal point for the room. In the living room, a soft green couch will contrast with the hardwood floors and brick or stone fireplace.
Find Antiques
Complementing the rustic look are special antique pieces. You may have an old potbellied stove or an antique hutch for your dinnerware. Add these pieces to create an authentic feel for a simpler time and place.
Get Personal
Use your personal items as decorative touches. Place books and special collectibles on a wooden bookcase or open shelving. Display photos of your family – bonus points if you have some done in black and white or sepia. The room should tell a story and let people know who you are through the items you have displayed. Just don’t put out too many or you will go from rustic to cluttered.
A rustic home speaks of warmth and relaxation. You can make your home a place to unwind, a place you look forward to going at the end of every day with the right décor. Whether you are building a brand new house or updating your current home, with a limited budget or plenty of money to spend, you can find ways of incorporating this look.
