Hardwood Flooring Color Trends for 2018 |
Posted: January 18, 2018 |
With a new year comes new styles in hardwood flooring, new color options and new ideas about what works. If you have plans to install a hardwood floor this year, you’ll want to know what’s hot, what’s out and what just might work for your home.
Color Trends
Dark floors have been popular for the last decade, and that isn’t changing for 2018. Darker stains tend to appeal most to homes without children. However, the dark colors are moving towards cool tones instead of the warm reds and yellow undertones of the past. Gray has become a trend on the walls, so the floors are following suit. You’ll see gray hardwood flooring in Toronto homes and throughout the country.
Some common blends include ebony with dark walnut or a true black. True black is an ideal choice for homes with a lot of different colors of wood, but it does show dirt more. If you want to go darker but not too dark, you can try antique brown or coffee brown.
Lighter Tones
Another trend is with gray wood. You’ll see gray becoming more popular with vinyl and tile as well, but it’s also a trend with hardwood. Refinishing hardwood floors and staining them gray is not an easy task. Even a lot of contractors don’t know how to do this job successfully. It’s important to hire a professional if you want to go gray.
Lighter shades are just as trendy as the dark tones. It happens to be the second most popular choice in hardwood floors. Still, you’ll find more homeowners leaning towards cooler shades. With these shades, the goal is for a more natural look without a yellowish tint that is seen with many other floor choices.
The Sheen
Along with the color you’ll want to think about the sheen. Glossy finishes are out of style and look dated. They are difficult to keep clean because they show every scratch and bit of dust. Matte and satin are what homeowners are looking at now.
Not only are these sheens the popular options, they are easier to clean and they last longer. Anyone who is looking for practical styles with hardwood flooring will be happy with this current trend.
More homeowners are looking for polyurethane or oil products that are long-lasting and good for the environment. Even though the products often cost a little more, they will last much longer so you end up saving money in the long run.
Oiled floors are becoming a trend as well. The result is a dull finish with high durability. You have your choice of oils, but some you can find include linseed oil, safflower, soy or sunflower. Just add extra oil to remove the appearance of scratches on your floor and keep it looking like new. Because oiled floors are easier to maintain, they are gaining in popularity.
While it’s a good idea to look at what’s trending in hardwood floors, you should also make sure it’s something you like and will enjoy for many years.
