Decorating for the Holidays |

As you plan for the holidays, you’ll want to think about decorating your home to create a festive atmosphere. Here are some tips to help you create the right environment for entertaining or just hanging out with family.
Consider Architectural Elements
Your holiday decorations don’t stand alone. They are part of a complete design. You must think about the decorative elements that stay in a room all year long. For instance, you may have tile or hardwood flooring in a Toronto home. A large bay window may be the focal point in the living room or you may have high ceilings.
Not only do you want your decorations to fit in with the current style of the room, you can use those features as part of your holiday design. For example, high ceilings would make it easy to bring in a tall Christmas tree. A large bay window might be the perfect spot for greenery or scary images at Halloween. Before you begin decorating, think about the features already present in your home.
Choose a Theme or Style
Before you begin decorating, you’ll want to decide what theme you’re going for. For example, with Halloween, you could go with a scary design or a cute look. At Christmas, you may want traditional or modern. You may focus on casual or more formal.
You want all your decorations to fit in the theme for a cohesive look. Otherwise, the room will just end up looking unfinished. Now, that’s not to say you can’t come up with an eclectic look. However, even with this design there is a common thread. It may be the color or pattern or some other element, but it brings all the décor together. Select a Color Scheme
If you want to create a complete look with your decorations, one of the easiest ways to do it is through a color scheme. Select one, two or three colors and use those shades for all your decorations. With Halloween, it may be purple and orange, orange and black or some other pairing. At Christmas, you can always go with the traditional red and green or select a more modern color pairing, like silver and blue, purple and gold or black and white.
When you choose a few colors for your decorations, you make them more memorable. They will stand out in the room and make a strong impression. You can either go with colors you already have in the room or select something that provides a stark contrast. Just make sure everything works well together.
Decorating for the holidays can be a lot of fun, but it can also be confusing and stressful. Whether you are planning a big holiday party, visiting family or just a festive atmosphere for the household, you’ll want to add a few fun touches. Follow these tips and look at how your decorations work with your walls and carpet, tile or hardwood floors to create a festive place for family and friends.
